Ramya Vasudevan
Sridhara Venkatesa Dikshitar (13-8-1635–1720), popularly known as Ayyaval, was a Hindu saint and composer who lived in the village of Thiruvisanallur in the then Thanjavur Maratha kingdom. Ayyaval was the son of one Sridhara Lingarayar, a Brahmin who settled in Thiruvisanallur, during the reign of Shahuji I. Ayyaval's father was the Diwan of the Mysore kingdom. That was the period when Muslims invaded India. The King of Mysore maintained good relations with the Muslim rulers. Artists and musicians from neighboring kingdoms moved into Mysore hoping the King of Mysore, being a Hindu King would protect them. Lingarayar was so engrossed in his job, that he had no time for spirituality. Sridhar Ayyaval, on the contrary, was very focused on the purpose of life from his early life and was a staunch devotee of Lord Shiva.
